Harriet Tubman’s date of birth isn’t known, so today, on March 10th, we celebrate and remember her on the day of her death with this art piece by artist and playwright
Karen Jones Meadows, Magnificence.
Born into slavery, Harriet’s body was scarred from the horrific torture and abuse she endured with her body being whipped regularly.
Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross and later changed her name to her mother’s name as her mother, Rit, so inspired her. Rit watched as her family was torn apart. She stood up to those that enslaved her and her family. Through her living example of strength under oppression, she fought to keep what remained of her family together.
Initially, Harriet escaped with her two brothers but then returned with them. The next time, she escaped alone. She was courageous over and over again, risking everything to help rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, through the Underground Railroad.
Karen has a special place in her heart for Harriet Tubman and wrote and performed the play
Harriet’s Return.
